Portland, OR (PRWEB) June 19, 2008

Professional racecar driver Todd Harris will leave behind the classroom and skid pads at his Pro Drive Racing School to challenge the internationally famous four-mile circuit known as Road America. He is the president of Pro Drive, Inc. at Portland International Raceway, and has been competing in a variety of motor racing events throughout North America over the past 18 years.

Harris is contesting two Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) classes at the 53rd Annual Piggly Wiggly® June Sprints® this weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. He is entered in the GT1 class with a full race modified Corvette that used to compete in the professional SCCA Trans-Am series, and is sponsored by Fluge Global Adventures (FGA).

“I’ll be challenging some of the best drivers in America this weekend, and hoping to throw them a curveball they weren’t expecting,” Harris said.

The FGA Corvette is the same mount Harris rode to the Rose Cup title last year, and to a second place finish this month. However, to be eligible for the GT1 class the engine has to be changed from 380 to 310 cubic inches. That means about a 100 HP decrease from Rose Cup configuration. The competitors in the GT1 class consist of 200 mph Corvettes, Camaros, Jaguars, Monte Carlos, Porsches, Panoz and Mazdas.

His tube frame GT racecar, built by Derhaag Motorsports, produces over 650 horsepower and will be one of the fastest entries in Sunday’s race. Derhaag Corvettes have a Trans-Am race winning heritage, including victories at such famed circuits and events as the Long Beach Grand Prix, Cleveland Grand Prix, Road America, Laguna Seca and more. His crew will consist of local racing experts Pat McFall, Gary Bockman and Dane Dennison, and he’ll pit with the Derhaag team.

Jim Derhaag, team owner of Derhaag Motorsports, has entered Simon Gregg in the June Sprints, and is fielding one of three Corvettes he has built in the 30 car field.

The four-mile circuit at Road America is known for its long, high speed straightaways. “Jerry Hansen told me years ago that the only time you take your foot off the throttle is for the pace car and checkered flag,” Derhaag said of the former multiple national champion and race winner.

“The competition is going to be tough,” Derhaag explained, “and you’re going to need a good, solid platform with lots of horsepower.” His team has won four SCCA National races this season, and finished second twice.

Harris is also contesting the Spec Racer Ford class along with fellow Pro Drive teammates Steve Fogg, David Oliver and Jim Murray. Spec Racer Fords are 100 horsepower identically prepared rear engine cars built especially for racing. Todd has competed at four different race tracks this season in Spec Racer Ford: Phoenix International Raceway, California Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, Calif., and Portland International Raceway.

He has eight starts in 2008 with eight top three podium finishes, including three wins and four pole positions. His career Spec Racer Ford record stands at 85 starts, 68 top three finishes, 48 pole positions and 45 wins.

“Making the transition from 650 HP to 100HP will be a challenge, but not something I’m unfamiliar with,” Harris explained. The four-mile race track at Road America goes by a lot faster at 190 mph than at 120 mph,” he added, “but the racing principles for going fast and winning are still the same.”

GT1 practice starts Friday at 12:40 p.m. central time, followed by qualifying Saturday at 10:55 a.m. The green flag falls on the GT1 race field Sunday at 1:15 p.m.

About Todd Harris:

The son of an amateur race car driver, Todd was immediately attracted to the sights and sounds of competitive auto racing and started his racing career in go-karts. Before moving into the world of car racing, Todd won many regional and state karting championships. The transition from karts to cars went smoothly for Todd, as he claimed many victories during his rookie season of car racing.

The Tigard, Oregon resident continued his success by becoming the Northern Pacific and Oregon Region Champion while setting track records at race tracks up and down the west coast. During a two-year period, Todd won 17 races in a row while racing in Sports Car Club of America’s most competitive class, Spec Racer Ford. In 1997, Todd received the “National Driver of the Year” award from the Sports Car Club of America’s Oregon Region.

In recent years, Todd has been competing and winning races in a wide range of race cars including sports racers, formula cars, and grand touring cars. If it has four wheels and a motor, chances are Todd is going to be fast in it.

This exceptional driving versatility was most recently evident when he entered races in a 125cc go-kart, a Mazdaspeed Miata, a Spec Racer Ford, and a 650 horsepowered GT1 Camaro all within a few weeks. He finished with three wins and a second.

When Todd is not behind the wheel of a race car, he is coaching drivers ranging from amateur club racers to professional racecar drivers competing in the likes of NASCAR and IndyCar. He can also be found on local television and radio stations offering valuable driving advice to motorists.

Todd is a graduate of Portland State University, an avid guitar player, and classic film buff. He and his wife Jennifer have two sons, Calvin and Taylor. They love to watch their daddy race!

Todd has combined his passion for racing with his extensive teaching skills and engaging personality to become a highly respected professional in the driving industry.

About the Road America June Sprints:

Over 400 amateur competitors race in 24 classes during this event, one of the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) largest races. Road America’s history dates back to the early 1950s when public street races in the Elkhart Lake area were a part of the SCCA national championship series. When street racing became illegal in 1952, participants and supporters joined efforts and raised funds to develop Road America. The track held its first event, the SCCA National, on September 10-11, 1955. The inaugural June Sprints® was held the following year, June 23-24, 1956. Today, the 14-turn, 4.048-mile track holds its original configuration and continues to challenge the world’s best two- and four-wheel racers.

Hickory, NC (PRWEB) June 25, 2008

Shell’s Bar-B-Q, a local diner landmark with 50 plus years of serving barbecue, hot dogs, burgers and other American delights to the Hickory area, was recently featured in the Hickory Daily Record, a daily newspaper in the North Carolina area. Shell’s Bar-B-Q has been a favorite hangout for locals since the 1950s and is continuing their success owners, Lisa and Blake “Bee” Watts Jr.

The article, titled “Family Fare” explains the history of Shell’s and how the current owners are keeping the diner legacy alive with new additions to the menu and the building. The couple has owned the restaurant since 1989. The building was rapidly deteriorating and “They bought the 1950s-style DJ’s Diner building from NASCAR racer Dale Jarrett in late 2001 and moved it from Rock Barn Road in Conover to its new home behind the original Shell’s,” wrote John Dayberry, Record Business Editor at the Hickory Daily Record. “The new restaurant has allowed for an expanded menu and a drive-up window with a longer–and safer–approach.”

The menu boasts an extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, as well as daily and dessert specials. Banana splits, ice cream and milkshakes also have been added to the menu. The homemade fried apple pie is a favorite along with the Bar-B-Q deluxe platter, which includes chopped and sliced bar-b-q served with cole slaw, baked beans, potato salad, fries, onion rings, hushpuppies and bread.

The new, 2,400-square foot restaurant’s comfortable searing and nostalgic décor will likely lead to more patrons eating in the diner, rather than taking items to go. Shell’s also sponsored a pre-season pep rally for the neighboring St. Stephen’s high school football program recently and has also catered tail-gate parties at the school.

About Shell’s Bar-B-Q

Fred and Violet Shell opened Shell’s in 1952 in an 800-square foot building and the eatery has since become a diner staple for generations. Lisa and Blake “Bee” Watts Jr. became owners of the restaurants in 1989 and have recently expanded the menu and created a drive-up window to contribute to the nostalgic dining establishment.

Houston, Texas (PRWEB) June 30, 2008

For the last six years, the JEG’s Engine Masters Challenge has invited 30 engine builders to compete in the newest form of motorsports “Dyno Racing.” After making the finals in their first attempt in 2006, the School of Automotive Machinists (SAM) instructors and students were excited to be once again selected to compete in the 2007 challenge.

And the team produced record breaking results.

According to SAM representatives, the rules of the event change each year in order to challenge the machinists to design and build a combination that makes power from 2500 – 6500 RPM. This year’s entrants were allowed to build combinations from 300 to 500 cid. The dyno results were divided by cubic inches in order to determine the winner.

“Once we found out we were selected to compete again, our team immediately started looking at the different combinations to fit the new rules. After a Ford vs. Chevrolet debate, it was decided that two engines would be built, a 351 Cleveland Ford and a 400 Chevrolet small block,” stated SAM Director of Education Judson Massingill.

“The SAM team is very proud that both engines made the finals, the first team ever in Engine Masters history to have two engines in the finals. The Ford qualified 2nd and the Chevy 4th and in the overall results the Chevy finished 3rd and the Ford was 5th,” added Massingill.

The School of Automotive Machinists was founded in 1985 by Linda and Judson Massingill. The School was the concept of Judson, who since 1979 has owned Northwest Engine & Supply. After realizing that finding and keeping quality machinists was an immense challenge and frustrated that the best employees stayed only long enough to learn the business before leaving to open their own shop, Judson recognized a need. Judson was determined to establish a place where machine shop owners could find trained help.

Judson began teaching the science and skill of machining that he had acquired from his involvement in building and testing winning engines for stock car racing, drag racing, offshore powerboats and numerous other motorsports venues. Consequently, the School of Automotive Machinists was founded to fill a need and a void in the automotive industry.

SAM is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, ACCSCT, which recognizes the school for maintaining a standard of excellence at or above the prescribed national standards for quality education.

The students are taught by experienced instructors and are trained on industry standard machines. Today graduates from the School of Automotive Machinists go on to work for race industry leaders like Penske Racing, Warren Johnson Enterprises Inc., Hendrick Motorsports, John Force Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Dart Machinery just to name a few.

Alexandria, VA (PRWEB) July 16, 2008

Statisticians from across the United States will be discussing the role of statistics in sports, as a variety of sports topics are featured among the more than 2,500 presentations at the 168th annual Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), the American Statistical Association said today. One of the conference’s late-breaking sessions is devoted to the topic of steroid use in major league baseball, and several more sessions on sports topics are sprinkled throughout the 5-day program at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver August 3–7. JSM, the world’s largest annual gathering of statisticians, is attended by more than 5,000 statistics experts from the government, industry and academic sectors.

Beginning with the late-breaking session, some of the sports sessions are listed below; each includes the title, presenter(s), a brief description and a link to the full abstract. Other sessions on tennis and volleyball, for example, can be located by searching on keyword at http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.

What can statistical methods tell us about steroid use and its effects among major league baseball players? (Late-breaking Session — Activity #333)

Presenters: James H. Albert, Bowling Green State University; Michael J. Schell, Moffitt Cancer Center; Andrew Dolphin, Raytheon Company; Phil Birnbaum, Society for American Baseball Research

This panel discussion reviews results on hitting performance and looks at how these results can be applied to evaluating pitching performance. Are there unusual patterns of hitting of the “steroid sluggers” such as Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire, and are there similar unusual patterns of pitching of pitchers such as Roger Clemens?

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302726

Salary, Sponsorship, and Strategy: A Case for Statistics in Sports, Activity #281

Presenter: C. Shane Reese, Brigham Young University

Statistical analysis plays an important role in a variety of sports applications. Reese will discuss not only how statisticians can have an increasing role in player performance rating, but in salary negotiations, sponsorship, and strategy. A variety of sports applications will be considered, from baseball to basketball, NASCAR to volleyball.

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302451

Assessing the Accuracy of Sports Predictions, Activity #230

Presenters: Paul Stephenson, Grand Valley State University; John Gabrosek, Grand Valley State University; Dan Frobish, Grand Valley State University

The success of ESPN, sports periodicals and local sports radio stations has dramatically increased the number of “experts” that present their predictions for games, tournaments and seasons. But to what degree has the accuracy of these experts been evaluated and what metrics are appropriate to evaluate their accuracy?

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302230

Baseball Topics

Coors Field: Why Is the Home Field Advantage so High and What Are Its Implications? Activity #170

Presenters: Michael J. Schell, Moffitt Cancer Center; Dan Ayers, Vanderbilt University

Coors Field has the greatest home field advantage differentials of any baseball team in major league history. Home field differentials, however, need to be evaluated on the overall quality of the team. A key question is: does the team play particularly well at home, poorly on the road, or both? It is possible that the high altitude conditions at Coors disrupts the batting styles of hitters and leads to the team’s poor road performance. These and other issues complicate the Rockies playoff chances, making last year’s NL pennant win noteworthy.

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=300282

Visualizing Managerial Strategies in Baseball, Activity #230

Presenter: Steve C. Wang, Swarthmore College

Baseball fans intuitively know which individual players are similar or different. For example, Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines are similar to each other, whereas both differ from Mike Schmidt. But which managers are similar, and which are unusual, in terms of the strategies they employ?

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302022

Contracts and Performance in Major League Baseball, Activity #453

Presenters: Elaine Allen, Babson College; Julia Seaman, Pomona College

A baseball player’s day-to-day performance is largely unpredictable. For example, a player could have an excellent game one day and go hitless the next. However, by looking at statistics on an annual basis, trends can be identified and investigated.

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=300551

A Model of Playing Time for Pitchers in Major League Baseball, Activity #453

Presenter: Michael Greene, Deloitte Consulting, LLP

Injuries to baseball players heavily influence the statistical output of a baseball player over time. Missing time due to injuries complicates the prediction of a player’s future performance. Collecting comprehensive data on injuries is difficult, thus no complete databases are available. We propose a model for expected playing time for pitchers based on performance and player characteristics. http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302607

Football Topics

Is There Increased Parity in the NFL (Has Paul Tagliabue’s Dream Come True)? Activity #230

Presenter: Joseph Koopmeiners, University of Washington

The St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots completed worst-to-first turnarounds to win Super Bowls XXXIV and XXXVI, respectively, leading football fans and sports writers to speculate that the NFL had entered a new era of parity. We investigate this hypothesis by modeling year-to-year autocorrelation using NFL regular season results from 1970 to 2006.

http://www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2008/onlineprogram/index.cfm?fuseaction=abstract_details&abstractid=302026

Determination and Analysis of Factors Determining the Outcomes of National Football League Games, Activity #453

Presenters: Christopher Cohea, Oklahoma State University; Mark E. Payton, Oklahoma State University

The outcome of a National Football League game depends on numerous factors related to events that occur during the game. Over 40 variables were collected on a sample of 534 NFL games from the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Data from only one team (selected at random) will be utilized for each game.

Myrtle Beach, SC (PRWEB) July 30, 2008

Some of the greatest drivers of all time competed in this long anticipated inaugural event. They include names such as Harry Gant, Sterling Marlin, Geoff Bodine, Dave Marcis, Jack Ingram, Lake Speed, Larry Pollard, Charlie Glotzbach, Joe Ruttman, D K Ulrich, and Randy Lajoie. After winning the waxing Frenzy Pole Award by setting the fastest time during qualifications, Geoff Bodine brought home the victory and received his Barry Clapp custom designed Copley guitar.

“We want to give the fans who missed the live event a chance to view this piece of racing history”, said Jeff Gilder, creator of the RacersReunion Network. “This is the first time these guys have competed in a long time and there were some huge grins among them as they were climbing out of those cars after the race. It was very exciting being a part of this. I’m looking forward to seeing more Old School Racing,”

Moto Cycle Corp. is pleased to announce that Deneen White has joined the company as an operations manager.

Deneen is joining the company to handle the administrative functions including coordinating of all operational activities, deal with relationships and vendor communications. Edward DuCoin, president of Moto stated, “I’m so pleased to have Deneen join the company. She has made a huge difference already in the day-to-day operations and it is getting us set for significant growth. Based on my history of growing firms including Inc 500 companies, I understand the critical nature of having the best personnel possible, especially in a start-up phase. Deneen fits the role that we needed perfectly and we are thrilled to have her join the organization.”

Deneen White added “I am very excited about the opportunity that has presented itself to me. I look forward to working with Ed and everyone on the Moto team at this juncture of time in the company. I know that together, we are all going to accomplish great things.” Deneen comes from a background in marketing, meeting planning and administration and currently works at the corporate headquarters at the Waterfront Technology Center associated with Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey.
